THE first round of the NTT Data Pro-Am brought to you by Standard Bank was abandoned for the day due to inclement weather at Fancourt in South Africa on Thursday.

The opening round is now scheduled to get underway on Friday, with the men’s tournament reduced to 54 holes while the ladies will play two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

HotelPlanner Tour tournament director Gary Butler explained the reasons behind the abandonment of round one on the opening day. “When we got here, we had gotten 18mm of rain through the night, which, in itself is not a lot but when it comes on top of what you have already had, and it’s a top up, it got to a point where the course was too wet and we had to delay play to start with. “It was felt that the rain was still coming, the forecast was predicting rain for most of the day and we just got to a point where we felt that, this was not achievable to be able to get the course playable for golf today so we have now canceled today (Thursday), and we start tomorrow, hopefully,” said Butler. He also explained how the tournament would be structured over the remaining days. “The tournament is now being changed, it has been brought down to a 54 hole tournament and the way that we have done that is so we can get this event finished. If we continued with the same format of everybody playing the three different courses, we worked that if we had about a two hour delay to play at some stage over the next couple of days, that three rounds on three different courses was not achievable at all. “We have taken a decision that the men’s tournament will be played over Outeniqua and Montagu and the ladies are then going to the Links Golf Course and play their event over there. Their tournament has been shortened to two rounds which is Saturday and Sunday and they will have a practice round tomorrow there. We are going to go with (men's) golf tomorrow, and Saturday with a cut on Saturday night and those making the cut will then play Montagu on Sunday,” said Butler.

The tournament is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the HotelPlanner Tour.
